It’s National Poetry Month. Time to Celebrate!

In case you don’t already know, April is National Poetry Month. Poets, poetry lovers, poetry publishers, and poetry organizations nationwide have planned an array of activities designed to promote and celebrate poetry. We here at Four and Twenty are eager to join in the fun.

In keeping with the mission of National Poetry Month as developed by The Academy of American Poets, we plan to celebrate the vital role poetry plays in American culture by promoting both the reading and writing of poetry. We plan to do this in four ways.

1. We’re going to double our poetry offering.

Each month, we offer readers twenty-four fresh poems carefully selected from our submission pool. This month, we will offer forty-eight!

When will this double issue be released? On the same day we always release new issues: The third Tuesday of the month.

What date does the third Tuesday fall on in April? The twentieth.

Yes, that’s right, the April issue of Four and Twenty will be released on 4/20. How poetic is that?

2. We’re going to promote other online poetry journals.

We’re not the only online poetry journal out there. There are several worth noting, all of which have their own niches. Throughout National Poetry Month, we will feature some of the ones we are fond of right here on our site.

3. We’re going to NaPoWriMo it up.

One of the best ways for poets to celebrate National Poetry Month is to participate in National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo). The challenge of NaPoWriMo is to write a poem a day. Those participating in the challenge deserves some recognition. If you are participating in NaPoWriMo by posting a poem each day to your personal website or blog, send us a link to your site. We’ll add it to the list that’s featured right here on the NaPoWriMo 2010 page of

For those of you NaPoWriMo poets in need of some inspiration, don’t forget about our daily writing prompts on Facebook and Twitter. We also suggest using the prompts offered through Read Write Poem, one of our favorite poetry-promoting organizations.

4. We’re going to cut poets a deal.

Technically, Declaration Editing & Design, the company that publishes our fine journal, is cutting the deal. Any poet who mentions the Four and Twenty Fan Special to one of Declaration’s staff members will get ten percent off any poetry-related project. The offer is good for both editing and design services. This offer is good throughout the month of April.

So there you have it: our celebration of National Poetry Month. Feel free to party right along with us.
